On April 17, Extinction Rebels held a march at the Georgia Power building to continue to demand a 100% clean energy plan for Georgia in the utility company’s long-range plan. Georgia Power is currently in the process of seeking approval for its Integrated Resource Plan for the state of Georgia, which is its 20-year plan for providing energy to the state. Currently the plan includes continued use of coal plants and a mere 1000 MW of solar.
Georgia Power’s plan for energy in Georgia is an inadequate response to the climate emergency. The city of Atlanta plans to shift to 100% clean energy by 2035 (which is also not soon enough), and we demand that the entire state of Georgia do the same – even faster. We have lots of sunshine in the south! We must transition immediately away from all fossil fuels to save the human habitat and prevent our own extinction.
The most polluting coal power plant is in Georgia in Monroe County. The county receives revenue while people die.
We must confront officials of the county and the plant. Georgia also does not have net metering.
