On April 10, Extinction Rebellion activists interrupted a Public Service Commission hearing for the Georgia Power 20-year Integrated Resource Plan to demand that Georgia transition immediately to 100% clean energy.

The Public Service Commission is supposed to regulate Georgia Power and speak for public interests, but several of the commissioners received significant campaign donations from Georgia Power and Southern Company, and in the past, the PSC has approved Georgia Power’s proposals with little or no pushback (and commissioners have even parroted Georgia Power talking points in their own communications).

To highlight the relationship between Georgia Power and the elected body intended to regulate it, Extinction Rebellion staged a mock wedding between Georgia Power and the Georgia Public Service Commission. The wedding was officiated by the Grim Reaper, showcasing the fact that Georgia Power’s partnership with the PSC is helping prevent Georgia from transitioning off fossil fuels and therefore furthering the threat of human extinction from climate change.
